What are we watching and working on in the Video Art class?

This class also goes by the title: One of the Best Classes I Have Ever Taught.

 

This course provides a historical survey of artistic experimentation with video imaging technology. 

Topics covered include relationships between art and technology, popular culture and television,

social critique and identity politics, and institutional presentation.

Basic Digital Photography

This studio course lays the foundation for study in photography by exposing students

to the historical and practical developments in the art of photography.  Students learn

to use digital still cameras to make exposures, process images in Photoshop, and print photographs.

In this course students learn to recognize the techniques and conventions that

structure our experience of cinema - narrative, mise-en-scene, cinematography,

editing, sound, genre - in order to understand how these various components

combine to yield an overall sense of film form.

 

Advanced Video Production

This advanced video production course is designed

for students who have experience working with

video equipment and are ready to realize conceptually

advanced projects that demonstrate a unique directorial vision.

The American Civil Rights Movement on Film

Spring 2006, Fifteen week course, 30 students

 

This advanced film analysis course focuses on the points of intersection

between moving image representation and the Civil Rights Movement.

Course content includes television news from the 1960s, historical bio-pics

such as Malcolm X, and documentaries including Eyes on the Prize.

 

Immigration and Film

The film analysis course functions as an in-depth investigation

into the politics of representation of ethnic identity in the

United States, as well as an overview of various

This workshop introduces the basics of desktop

video editing with Final Cut Pro. This intensive weekend

workshop covers logging and capturing, creating titles,

importing graphics, audio editing and working with timelines.

 

Video Art and the Everyday

How can home movies become source material for video art

and autobiographical documentary projects? This one-day

workshop is an introduction to the art of personal filmmaking

as well as an investigation into the special challenge that

documenting our own daily lives presents.

This class is an intensive introduction to Final Cut Pro, the amazing

all-in-one video editing, compositing, and special effects

package for the Macintosh. Learn how to work with keyframes,

edit multiple video and audio tracks, apply filters, create

transitions, and more.

This workshop introduces students interested in all modes of

video-making how to turn into stylish and meaningful productions.

Principles of Video Production

This ten-week course introduces the beginning video-maker to

the fundamental techniques of digital video production.  The course

covered basic camera operation, storyboarding, production design,

shot composition, lighting, audio recording, non-linear editing, and

DVD authoring.
