Experiments in Immediacy

2005 - 2006

In 2005 and 2006, I put myself into a six month process where I

investigated these questions: what are immediate experiences

here in this mediated saturated millenium? How can I create or

catch them with videotape, and how could I share them in an

immediate way? I focused on my own daily life activities and

searched for moments where I felt intensely present and aware

of my immediate surroundings.

To explore these questions, I created a series of videos

documenting private immediate moments.  In my search for

immediacy, I broke various social norms, engaged in

public antics, left the camera on while doing post-party clean-

up, spent time with wild creatures at the zoo, and much more.

Each month I put the results a of my experiments onto a DVD

and sent them via the United States Postal Service to 25

people who had subscribed to my underground video club.

These people included my three graduate school advisors

and 22 dear friends I've collected throughout the years.

This very personal, known audience was who I made the work

for; each performance had this small, loved group in mind. I

thought that this was a more intimate, personal, and immediate

way to share the work. I designed nice covers and included a

newsletter with the monthly package. None of us knew what

was coming each month. It was actually quite stressful.

The Experiments in Immediacy videos have since

screened in a variety of locations and sitautions from art

galleries to clubs to private living rooms.
